HISTORY
In 1971, brothers Stephan and Jimmy Tsukuyama opened Kailua Bike Shop on Uluniu Street. A year later, the infamous energy crisis was upon us. Bike sales soared and with the additional capital, the company expanded into the wholesaling packaged plant items. To appeal to the tourism industry, Hawaiian Island Creations was composed in 1972 and Paul Ichimura was commissioned to create the present distinctive symmetrical
logo.
1974 marked the relocation to the present Kailua store on Hahani Street. Surf accessories and "Kailua Surfboards" were introduced. A year later, a full-scale skateboarding department was added. The opening of the Board of Water Supply products, one of the first surfboard manufacturing factories, soon followed.
HIC's reputation of warm and friendly personal service influenced the management of Ala Moana Center to a rare invitation to a rare invitation to HIC to open a bike and surf shop. By the summer of 1980, the HIC flagship store opened as Hawaiian Island Sports. Five years later, HIC Bike and Surf opened in the Pearlridge Shopping Center. The same year, the wholesale division and Board of Water Supply products were closed, so that emphasis could be placed on the growing retail division.
In October 1995, HIC opened in Haleiwa Town on the North Shore of O'ahu. The next few years brought dramatic changes to the make-up of the company. HIC's first Japan Addition opened in the city of Chiba in April
of 1997.
Presently, Coral Head in California is the national HIC clothing licensee and SFO Hawaii is the surfboard licensee. Internationally, HIC has licensees in
the USA, Europe, Australia, Brazil, and Japan. |
