team riders: Nainoa Ciotti, Kelia Moniz- Team riders come and go but these two are much more than that, Kelia and Nainoa are genuine ambassadors of the sport.
philosophy: Enjoy the ride and be grateful! When you have the opportunity to surf, be very grateful!
inspiration: Mahalo Ke Akua, Mom And Dad, my wife Donna, my children- Kai, Kekoa and Ke’alaokeakua, Walter & Loretta Ritte and the rest of my Molokai ‘ohana.
favorite surf trip: went to G-land for almost a month with Jerry Lopez, Michael Ho and some of the guys from Maui including my long time friend Dave Peterson.
favorite surfer: Tim Edwards (Woody)- definitely the style master, even at ? years old vision of future shapes: Biodegradable materials, changes in hull design and board materials that will allow us to redefine the shape of a board almost instantaneously.
the unexpected: In 1977 Rusty Preisendorfer shaped for me for a season under my first label “Green Lantern Surfboards”, Shaun Thompson rides the ugliest board I ever built in a grade B movie called “Surfs Up”, Owl Chapman was my team rider at Swamis in 81, and a lucky one: I left my used board at “On Top Surf Shop” in Kauai in 83 and “Mouse” made the front cover of Surfer two months later on the same board- That shot became the Brewer promo piece for the next couple of years. Still remains my favorite Honolua shot.
through the years: At this stage of my life it’s hard to remember when I wasn’t shaping. Probably the most exciting era of my shaping career would be the years of the partnership with Brewer. This was a great period in the advent of modern surfboard design where we went from single fins to twins to thrusters and even quads for a while. Working with Gary Linden, Sam Hawk, Owl Chapman and of course Dick Brewer, there was a tremendous amount of energy going on at that time. It seemed like almost every legendary surfer of that era passed through our doors and rode our boards at one point or another. Despite the intense environment and big egos that went on, there was also a great sense of comradree as we also took the time to go surfing together on a regular basis. As far as surfboard design goes, I really believe we were way ahead of the game at that time. In this current era, where retro and alternative boards play such an important role, it has been great fun to pull from all of these designs that were a part of my catalogue from the past. I can actually say that I was there, playing an active role in the conception of it all. Experimentation of design will always be a part of who I am as a shaper.
The Culture: Any one who knows me also knows how important my hanai island culture is to me. The old ways and ancient traditions are still alive on Molokai. To live in our culture is to live life to it’s fullest. We love in a genuinely Hawaiian way yet we protect our island with an intensity that few understand. We do so as stewards of our land and in honor of the generations that have passed and in respect of those yet to come. Despite the commercial sugar coating that tends to disguise the real essence of surfing, surfing and the craft of surfboard building will always be Hawaiian. We will always owe the Kupuna of the past for bringing this knowledge to the rest of the world. A famous Hawaiian saying is “I ka wa Mua, ka wa ma Hope”- Our future is found in our past.
